It has been a while since I last written anything, and the last few weeks have been a nightmare for me. I don't know if it is just me, being careless or it is just the luck, I have lost a lot of my precious things. Thanks to those that were there to give me support, to listen to my cries, to wipe my tears, to go through all the hell with me...thanks to Angelene, Moon, Tiongeng, Aunty Peggy, Karine, Kerhoong, my housemates...you have been just wonderful. I am still grieving for the losses of my purse
s, my favourite mug, my necklace
s but yeah, I have came in terms of it already.
It was good to be with CTG last night. At least it brightened up my weekend. The review was not very inviting. I was warned that the show is boring, lousy, not interesting......and surprisingly, I find the play excellent! It is a great breaktrhough for CTG to produce Jia, after a contemparory play - Crouching Husband Hidden Wife (金屋藏公) and a musical - I have a Date with Spring (我和春天有个约会). They are all unique in their own way and uncomparable.
Jia, is a classic piece written by BaJin (巴金)and edited by CaoYu (曹禺). The verses were well written, and the play structure well organised. Well, I have to admit that the flow might be slow, but there's how the play is. Overall the acting is not bad, especially Yu Tong. I have seen her acting in all the 3 plays, and I must say, her acting has improved a lot. From an excellent actress to a super outstanding actress, I believe she would bring her skills out to the stage outside and would be one of the famous actress. She deserve an Oscar if there was one. She was full of emotion, full of energy and vibrant in her. She brought the strong character out as a supportive and understanding wife. She truely potrayed a lady in the olden days.
There were some funny characters, like David and Coper. They added spices to the show. David's childish face, and Coper's crazy comments, must have woken a lot of sleeping audience. Not to forget, the 三姑六婆 characters as well. It is kinda funny to listen to how they talk, because if we look back on ourselves, we talk about other people as well....funny...they bitch, they crap...and this was actually how rich ladies then enjoyed their days.
As how love stories go, they could not run away from any hugging and tears. The scene when the 3rd son was hugging is lover who is the family's slave, there was a LOUD sigh in front of my row. Upon hearing the sigh, I burst into laughter in the middle of the serious scene. I mean, I could understand this guy - NOT another of this 婆婆妈妈 scene...but hey, this is the scene that needed to show the strong bond lof love. It was kinda embarassing, especially when the whole theater was concerntrating.
I was impressed by the costume and have to admit that the whole team did an excellent job. All the cheongsam, samfus were beautiful and I know, were not easy to find in Melbourne. But these people managed to find everything that was needed. The props and the sets as well, they managed to potray a house in the early days within the budget. There were wedding bed, antique vase and furnitures, 梅花, up to simple props like chinese calligraphy sets and tea sets. They all fit in the small stage. The lighting was ok, and the sound was alright, which I think there should be more room for improvement. The makeup was good, and the subtitled has improved enormously. The production team I have to say, has done a great job!
Many people didn't like the show, which I truely understand why - the flow. But one have to bear in mind that you can't compare it with the funny Crouching Husband Hidden Wife and the entertainning I have a Date with Spring. This is a classic, an oriental Shakespear...and they all have their speciality.
Great job, CTG. I felt the warmness of the 家 .
